Spoiler alert: Elsey Davis completed her Circuit of Cornwall in 6 days, 8 hours & 12 minutes, a new FKT (Fastest known time).
We interviewed Elsey in the final weeks before the big effort...
Elsey vs 400 miles of coastal Cornwall.
“Running helps anchor me when things feel adrift. This is my way of honouring my mum and hopefully showing others they’re not alone.”
The FKT (Fastest Known Time) covers both the north and south coasts, cutting across the county, and climbing a staggering 60,000 feet in total.
Elsey's aiming to do it in under seven days.
“The camper van hire doesn’t last much longer than that… and I don’t want a big fine from the company!”
This isn’t a race and for Elsey the motivation is deeply personal.
"A couple of years ago my mum was diagnosed with young-onset Alzheimer’s. The main goal is to raise as much money as I can for Alzheimer’s Research UK. When things get hard, I’ll just think about her, that’s my ‘why’.”
What's the Plan Elsey?
So the big plan.. To run about 100 kilometres a day, for up to 16 hours at a time.
“The optimistic plan is I start on Monday and finish on Saturday. I want to do it in less than seven days. I’ve got a route mapped out, and even if I fall short one day, the goal is just to keep moving, rest, and then get up and go again.”
And unlike recent events like UTMB this challenge will be different in both tone and spirit.
“It’s refreshing not to feel like you’re being chased or chasing someone else. This is truly me versus me. It feels more purposeful.”
And while the physical demands are unimaginably immense, there’s also joy in the challenge.
“I’m not nervous, I’m excited. It feels like something exciting coming up, rather than the nerves I get before a race."
And while Cornish coasts hold a reputation for unpredictable weather Elsey is ready for whatever comes.
“If it’s windy, I just hope it blows the right way, behind me for the whole day. That would be a dream.”
