...series in cahoots with coach & running-longevity-guru: Tommy Lewis.
Every now and then we'll be sending over some (professional) advice on how to stay on your feet for years & years. Even, dare we say it, when running isn't cool anymore. Take it away Tommy...
No watch, app, coach, or the latest AI-enabled-virtual-tech-productcan feel what you feel in your body.
Yet so many runners outsource every decision to various digital apps, push through fatigue and ignore niggles just because it's 'in the plan'.Longevity requires trust in yourself.
Listening doesn’t mean avoiding hard work. It means understanding the difference between discomfort and danger.
Sometimes rest is the right call. Fatigue, low motivation, and heaviness can all be signals, not weaknesses.
Sometimes 'doing the work' is intuition. Other days, reluctance is just mental resistance. Learning which is which takes time and honesty.
1. Check-in before training.
Ask yourself: Do I feel stiff, tired, flat, or energised? Let that answer guide how hard you train. Try using a journal to note how the body feels.
2. Stop. Meditate. Listen.
To really know how you're doing you have to stop. Learn the difference between 'tired' and 'warning signs'.
Dull fatigue is normal. Sharp pain, persistent niggles, or loss of motivation are signals to adjust.
3. Swap sessions: Remember, you are in charge.
If your body is asking for strength work, mobility, or rest - listen. Plans should serve you, not trap you.
Thanks Tommy!
