"LA 2028 is the dream, it’s the thing that’s always in the back of my mind." Kate Axford
You'll find every flavour of runner in our Strava Club. Newbies to pros. 5K speedsters to 100 mile mavericks. The dream of creating a space for every stage of runner is slowly starting to materialise.
Two of which are pro runner Kate and her partner Jack. We joined them for a gentle jaunt around Richmond park last Sunday to hear about what inspires their running and what they both have their eyes on for the road ahead.
Kate is a former GB hockey international and has only just switched to running in Spring 2023 (representing England and Belgrave Harriers). In Kate's words, "It was my win at Comeback 5000 last year that made me realise that I could have a future in this sport. My desire to fulfil my potential is really what drives me. I owe it to myself to see how far I can go! LA 2028 is the dream, it’s the thing that’s always in the back of my mind".
It's not every day you get to go for a run with an aspiring Olympian so we quizzed her on her top tips for anyone looking to land a 5K pb; "Don’t be afraid of taking on those intimidating sessions that feel too hard, try to get a good mix of speed work and endurance in your training, and when choosing shoes, think more about what suits your unique running style, over just going for the most expensive ones!".
Jack is also another recent running convert. "Being so new to it, I’m just taking it race by race. My first ever race was the Telford 10k in December 2023 which I managed to clock 31:41. So I would like to build on that this year and race more! This years dream is to run a sub 31:00 for 10k and sub 15:00 for 5k - hopefully also run at some big races like Night of the 10ks at Parliament Hill!"
We also asked him for his top advice for any new runners, "It’s something I learned the hard way, but try to avoid doing too much, too soon! Consistency is key. Managing how much you are doing and not progressing mileage and/or intensity too quickly is essential in injury prevention. I'm no coach, but I try to stick to increasing my mileage ~10% a month! ".
Godspeed Jack and Kate! Big respect for all you're doing with your running. Sorry to drag your fresh wheels through the mud.
