let us commune

by Ed Vickers

We hear a lot about #community in running these days. Here are a few reason why. It seems running with other's might not just be a nice to have but a performance imperative.

We all have our reasons to run.

Whatever yours is, guaranteed, doing some our your sessions with others will take your health, performance and dare we say, happiness, to new heights. Here’s a few reasons why;

Health related

Build habits. It’s a classic self help sound bite, “first you make your habits, then your habits make you.” But it’s true. The art of reaping running benefits lies in the ability to build habits, formed through consistency over time. It’s shown that running as part of a community has a direct affect on how often we show up. Rain or shine. The good sort of peer pressure.

De-stress. Connecting with others often gives us a breather from focusing on ourselves (and our own stresses). Many will testify to having their most meaningful conversations out on the road with their mates.

Belong. Belonging has everything to with sharing meaningful experiences with those we love and feeling part of a tribe that we can contribute to. Rallying others along, doubles the run joy for everyone.

Performance benefits

These are a mix of psychological, physiological, and social factors. Here’s a few that go beyond the obvious competitive factor.

Get accountable: When you have a running buddy or a group waiting for you, you're less likely to cut corners, complete the session and hit those splits.

Reduced Perceived Effort: Distraction can do wonders for reducing the perceived effort of exercise. Studies have shown that when running with a friend, people tend to rate their effort lower compared to running alone, even when working at similar intensities.

Reduce risk: Running with others offers a safety net. Having someone remind you to keep on top of your nutrition and hydration, or even to ease off if you have a niggle, can make all the difference in injury management.

Unifying all these benefits is the simple matter of enjoying your running (easy to forget!) - the most sustaining fuel for any runner. While everyone enjoy’s the solitude and disconnect of those solo long run, having some degree of social dynamic to your run life is crucial.

The hope of what we’re up to at SUMS (beyond performance products), is to connect runners, in person and virtually. So just know, if you’re part of the Strava Club, you're never running by yourself.
